WINTER / SPRING 2011- UPCOMING SPEAKERS Topics and speakers subject to change. January 4 Jill Bergart-Yoga pre/post-natal and for kids Jill is a local mom who currently teaches yoga at Orange Dot and also privately. She teaches prenatal yoga classes, Hatha yoga classes and Mom and Baby yoga classes (learn about Baby Shiatsu and yoga for your baby, too.). She also teaches kids ages 2.5-3.5 years old - with caregiver/parent where yoga postures are introduced 'loosely' and playfully. Jill will talk about the yoga classes that she offers, the benefits to having a yoga practice while pregnant and a postnatal practice specifically, as well as practicing yoga alongside baby. January 11 Nancy Johnston - Art Studio for Children Nancy runs a home based business now in it's 9th year called Art Studio for Children. Nancy has over 100 students a week, between her home studio, the programs that she offers through the school board, and the art events, and a summer art camp. Nancy will talk to the group about the angle of balance in a home-run business, as well as a covering what she offers in the community (workshops for moms, birthday parties, art camps and regular art classes throughout the week). Nancy will also explain a simple project for doing with our kids- "Watercolour for wee ones". January 18 Moms to be and More Karen Judd is the owner of "Moms to be and More" baby boutique and Teri Monczka is a program and registry coordinator at the store. They will visit as a team and discuss new and exciting baby and toddler items that will make your life easier. Also, they will discuss child safety and car seat safety. January 25 Lisa Williams - Stylist Join Lisa Williams as she discussed fashion tips, trends and what to wear everywhere. She'll show off new fashions and talk about what clothes best suit us. February 1 Melmira Amie Heenan of Melmira will teach us how to find a perfectly fitting bra and swim suit. She will bring samples of her fabulous wares. February 8 Autism Canada Marianna Ofner is a former Board Member of the Autism Canada Foundation. Marianna will speak to the group about how autism is diagnosed, most common characteristics, current treatments and how organisations like Autism Canada are changing lives for many families across Canada. Marianna will let us know how we can get involved and support the foundation. February 15 The Flying Dragon Bookstore Vikki Van Sickle is a bookseller at the Flying Dragon Bookstore, children's author, reviewer, teacher, playwright, director, and scholar. She has a degree in drama from Queen's University and a Master of Arts in Children's Literature from the University of British Columbia. Her first middle grade novel, Words That Start With B, came out September 1st, 2010 from Scholastic Canada. She will talk to the group about children's books, aspects of the writing process and writing specifically for children. February 22 Gymboree Class for Kids Gymboree will hold a special "Play and Music" class for us and our little ones and talk about age appropriate activities. March 1 Mama Earth Organics Interested in buying organic? Mama Earth Organics will teach us what "organic" means, the value of buying organic, how to get the best value for your shopping dollar and what products you should put at the top of your shopping list. March 8 Social -- Relax and chat with other moms over coffee and treats March 22 Continuum Wellness Sjouke and Tara to talk about the benefits of massage, naturopathy and acupunture March 29 Erin McFadden - Tandem Studios Erin Mc Fadden is the Director of Tandem Studios on Yonge Street that offers dance classes for children and fitness classes/personal training for their moms. The classes run at the same time so it's a great way for moms to use their time wisely and work out while their child dances. April 5 Lianne Phillipson-Webb - Sprout Right Nutrition Lianne Phillipson-Webb is an author, nutritionist and a mom. She runs seminars all over the city and is regularly on TV discussing nutrition for the whole family. She will talk about making baby and toddler food exciting and nutritious. She has been a favourite speeker in the past and is filled with helpful information about feeding us and our little ones. April 12 Holocaust Education Centre Always moving and inspirational, a holocaust survivor will attend to share her story with us. April 19 Edith Fisher - Toronto Fire How many of us have a "fire plan" that has been discussed with our family members? What is a fire plan and why do we need one? Edith will give us important information about fire safety and prevention. April 26 Social -- Relax and chat with other moms over coffee and treats May 3 Hank DeJong - Sheridan Nurseries Ask Hank all of your gardening questions! He always has great advice for planning and maintaining our gardens and planters. May 10 Heather -- Mama Earth Organics Heather from Mama Earth Organics is coming to educate us on the benefits of "going organic", including what we should and should not put on our priority list when at the grocery store and the small changes we can make in our every day life to increase the nutritional value of our meals. May 17 Emergency Response Training May 24 Rebecca Perlin - Speech Pathologist Rebecca will talk about recognizing speech and language issues in our children as well as current treatments. May 31 Sherry Thompson, RN, BScN and Glaucea Cardoso. B.A. Psych. on Postpartum Depression Sherry Thompson is a nurse-counsellor at St. Joseph's Women's Health Centre in Toronto and Glaucea Cardoso is currently working as a volunteer at the St. Joseph's Hospital with a special interest in portpartum depression and anxiety. They look at the effect of postpartum depression on families: causes, symptoms, risk factors, changes in parenting in recent generations, myths about motherhood, reactions of partners and the strategies for families for the transition to parenthood. June 7 Curves Curves Owner Tamara Blum Cohen will demonstrate a quick, easy workout that you can do in your own home with the tools you already own. June 14 Free the Children / MetoWe Charity begins at home. Join Free the Children / MetoWe as they teach simple ways to become charitable at home and to instill a desire to be charitable into our children's lives. June 21 Social Joing us for our last meeting of the 'year'. Stay tuned for our summer play date schedule.
